Michigan lawmakers are moving to crack down on telemarketers, scammers and bots barraging residents with unwanted calls and texts.

A five-bill package advanced Wednesday, Dec. 3, by a Senate committee would put new restrictions on these spam calls and texts and empower Attorney General Dana Nessel to go after violators and seek hefty fines.

“Far too many of us know what it’s like to be bombarded with unsolicited robocalls that disrupt our busy lives,” one of the bill sponsors, state Sen. Mary Cavanagh, D-Redford Township, previously said of the legislation. “It’s well past time that we put a stop to these unjust, deceitful tactics that take advantage of Michigan consumers — especially our most vulnerable, including seniors and folks with disabilities.”
