DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- With the possibility of the season's first wintry weather arriving Friday , the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said it will begin treating major roads, bridges and overpasses Thursday morning across several central counties.
"It doesn't matter how accustomed you are to driving in snow; it's very hard to drive on ice," said Kim Deaner with NCDOT.
Deaner said the department decided Wednesday to start prepping early, focusing first on areas that freeze the fastest. Crews will begin brining bridges and overpasses in Person, Vance, Warren, Granville, Franklin, Wake and Durham counties. They also plan to treat I-440, I-540, U.S. 64 and potentially Capital Boulevard.
She said the timing of the storm is a concern, as forecasts suggest freezing rain
