KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City woman pled guilty in federal court Wednesday to preparing and filing false income tax returns.
The woman, 35-year-old Tanisha Spencer, is accused of preparing false income tax returns for people who contacted her through Facebook. The returns included fraudulent Sick Leave and Family Leave credits, false fuel tax credits, and fraudulently inflated federal tax withholdings.
Federal court documents claim Spencer was able to manufacture substantial refunds to her clients that they were not entitled to if the returns were accurately filed.
In all, court documents say Spencer prepared 156 returns with more than $4 million in refunds claimed. The IRS wound up paying out nearly $700,000 of those refunds, the Department of Justice said.
