State prison officials say an inmate at Lee Correctional Institution died Wednesday following an assault inside the facility. The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is treating the case as a suspected homicide.

Xavier Martez Delesline, 33, was attacked in a common area of his living unit, according to SCDC spokesperson Chrysti Shain. The assault occurred Tuesday, and Delesline later died from his injuries.

The SCDC Inspector General’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division’s Crime Scene Unit and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy will be performed to determine Delesline’s exact cause of death.

No additional details about the assault or possible suspects have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
