The brutal, fatal assault on 71-year-old Baltimore City Department of Transportation traffic investigator Gregory Turnipseed is a sharp reminder of the ongoing challenge our community faces with public safety. According to Baltimore City police reports, on Oct. 17, Turnipseed was conducting his duly authorized duties when a confrontation with a teenager and her mother turned violent. Officials say the teen became irate and allegedly assaulted Turnipseed, with the mother inexplicably joining the fray, not to restrain the teenager, but to escalate the violent assault on Turnipseed. News of the incident came out the day after Thanksgiving, when Mayor Brandon Scott, State’s Attorney Ivan Bates and others released a statement announcing the assault after the passing of the city employee.
