IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Simulated gunfire echoed through the Iowa City VA Medical Center on Wednesday as officers rushed into a building during a planned active threat drill. The exercise brought VA Police and the Iowa City Special Response Team together for the first time, aiming to strengthen communication and real-time coordination during emergencies.
VA Police conduct quarterly active threat training, but officials said adding the city’s SRT provided a critical opportunity to understand how each agency operates.
“In this case we had the opportunity, as part of a larger exercise, to integrate the Iowa City Special Response Team — who would be our backup in the event of an actual event,” said Corey Roberts, Deputy Chief of Police for the Iowa City VA Police Service.
