WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) - An Eastern Iowa nonprofit that helps those fleeing domestic violence could soon lose funding to help survivors secure housing.

Friends of the Family stands to lose a million dollars due to changes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The nonprofit pays for families escaping domestic violence to stay in hotels.

But it also provides rent assistance for those families who are able to move into more permanent housing.

The nonprofit pays for those programs with HUD Continuum of Care funds.

It gets about $2 million a year.

But due to policy changes to HUD by the Trump administration, Friends of the Family expects to lose half of its funding.
