Police say they have uncovered a second body and explosives inside the Connecticut home where a man barricaded himself for hours and fired repeatedly at officers.
Jed Parkington, 63, has been identified as the man who held off Stamford police from inside an Oaklawn Avenue home on Tuesday. Federal marshals who were at the home to serve an eviction notice called police after he barricaded himself inside, Stamford Police Chief Tim Shaw said.
For hours, Parkington stayed locked inside. He traded gunshots with the Special Response Team, which had responded to remove him from the home, police said.
Hostage negotiators contacted Parkington to try to talk him out, but he refused to surrender.
At some point, police heard a single gunshot from inside the home.
Drones sent into the house showed a far more dangerous scene than expected. Shaw said the reconnaissance drones “observed multiple suspected explosive devices within the home, including apparent pipe bombs, grenades, and Molotov-style devices.”
Police later found Parkington's body with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
But there was one more grim twist. Officers also found a second decomposing body inside the home. Police have not identified the body, released a cause of death, or said how long it may have been inside the home.
The Office of the Inspector General is now investigating the exchange of gunfire involving Stamford officers. Shaw said the State Police Major Crimes Division was brought in to process the scene.
