Des Moines Public Schools is delaying classes for two hours Thursday, Dec. 4, because of anticipated extreme cold.

The "National Weather Service forecast for subzero temperatures tomorrow morning, including a wind chill nearing minus 20 during early morning bus routes," the district news release states as the reason for the delay. Related: Iowa will see record cold weather. Will districts cancel school?

On Thursday, Iowa is expected to have the coldest temperatures in the lower 48 states, according to meteorologists .

Des Moines schools' families should expect:

DMPS and DART buses will run routes two hours late.

Schools with breakfast-in-the-classroom will adjust serving times.

Lunch times will remain the same.

Classes will end at the regular time.
