Eleven years ago, after a particularly rough stretch early in the season when he was the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers uttered one word that has lived on in NFL lore. It’s a gif, a catchphrase for fans — and for Rodgers, it’s a frame of reference.
Following a 1-2 start to the 2014 season, he told everyone in Green Bay to “relax.” And he was right.
The Packers responded with 11 victories over their final 13 games during the regular season. The only thing that kept Rodgers from appearing in another Super Bowl was, ironically enough, a Russell Wilson touchdown pass in overtime of the NFC championship game.
Rodgers hasn’t given the “relax” speech in Pittsburgh despite the current dire straits, partly because he doesn’t believe it’s necessary.
