LA CROSSE, Wis (WXOW) – With extreme cold on the way, pet owners are reminded to take extra precautions when letting pets outside.

Veterinarian Dr. Douglas Kratt from Central Animal Hospital advises pet owners to be extra attentive during walks. Pets may exhibit subtle signs that they're in distress.

"They'll start holding up their paws. They'll start walking almost like they're on eggshells, that it's just a little bit too uncomfortable," Kratt said. "Or they're going to try taking us—they're going to turn us around before the magic spot and try to get us going back."

Other signs to look for are the pets slowing down or hunching up their bodies more than usual.

"They're probably telling us they're cold. Let's go ahead and let's get them back home," said Kratt.
