While Clement Acton Griscom and his wife Frances Canby Biddle repose together at the Church of the Redeemer Cemetery in Bryn Mawr, Penn., a memory of their love for each other has been left for the people of Westerly to enjoy.

Clement was born in Philadelphia on March 15, 1841. His parents were members of the Society of Friends and he attended Quaker schools before going out into the work force at age 16. Clement gained employment as a clerk at the shipping company of Peter Wright & Sons. He later delved into the crockery importing business and the export of petroleum. Eventually, Clement organized the largest steamship management company in the world – the International Navigation Company – and served as its president. The company later merged with the International Mercantile Marine Com
