HONOLULU (Island News) -- The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) issued a statement on Wednesday on the Honolulu City Council's vote to authorize a settlement with the family of Iremamber Sykap , the 16 year-old boy killed by police officers in 2021.
Police were in pursuit of Sykap and other suspects during a high-speed car chase on April 5, 2021. The police chase ended with shots fired near the intersection of Kalakaua Avenue and Philip Street, resulting in the teenage boy getting killed at the scene.
Three police officers were charged with murder and attempted murder, but those charges were rejected by a judge in Aug. 2021.
The Honolulu City Council voted on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, to authorize a settlement with his family in their lawsuit against the city.
