The Pentagon’s internal watchdog delivered a blunt warning to Congress this week, saying Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put US forces and a sensitive counter-Houthi mission at risk when he used the Signal messaging app to share precise strike details.
The watchdog’s assessment, described by two people familiar with the findings, said his actions violated Pentagon policy and exposed personnel to avoidable danger, according to the Associated Press.
The report concludes that Hegseth used his personal device to relay the timing of warplane launches and bomb drops against Yemen’s Houthi militants: information that was unclassified only because Hegseth himself had the authority to downgrade it.
