The Internal Revenue Service has halted a popular service that once provided a free option for taxpayers to file their taxes directly with the IRS.

The program, Direct File , was launched by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and IRS in early 2024 as a way for filers to file taxes independently and save money in the process.

While the IRS has not officially announced the tool’s demise to the public, it is no longer accessible online.

Filers seeking out the tool are met with a “Direct File is closed. More information will be available at a later date,” notice .

The Direct File tool was offered to 25 states — including Massachusetts.
