Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian has filed for personal bankruptcy, calling it a difficult but necessary step after years of financial strain, according to a statement released Wednesday, Dec. 3.
The announcement came the same day that developer Eustace Mita unveiled new redevelopment plans for the shuttered Gillian’s Wonderland Pier site, months after a luxury resort proposal was rejected. Mita and local business leaders urged elected officials to approve the project during a news conference.
Gillian said personal financial obligations, business decisions, and unforeseen events created challenges he could no longer manage. After consulting financial and legal professionals, he determined bankruptcy was the only responsible way to restructure his personal finances and regain stability.
In his statement, Gillian stressed that his personal filing has no impact on Ocean City’s municipal finances. He said the city’s budget, credit rating, and operations remain stable, adding that safeguards ensure public money is separate from personal finances.
Despite the filing, Gillian said he remains committed to his responsibilities as mayor. He said his focus continues to be public safety, economic development, and responsible investment in Ocean City’s future.
Gillian also acknowledged how financial hardship affects many families, saying he hopes his transparency encourages others facing similar situations to seek help.
He thanked residents, colleagues, and supporters for standing by him and asked for respect for his family as he works toward rebuilding.
