Despite nearly four decades as a coach, Jim Calhoun says he’s never been to a high school football game as a fan.

As the expression goes, there’s always next year.

On Tuesday, Lakeland’s athletic department posted news of the retirement of Calhoun, the school’s varsity head coach the past handful of seasons.

“There’s probably never a right time, but this is time,” Calhoun said Tuesday evening. “I’m 57 years old. I’ve done it for 38 years. I love the kids, I’ve loved everything about it, wouldn’t trade any of it back.
