KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee lawmakers are considering legislation that would give school boards the option to deny enrollment to undocumented students unless they pay tuition for public school.
The proposal passed the Tennessee State Senate last session but stalled in the House. Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, R- Oak Ridge, supports the measure. He said it would give local school districts decision-making power.
“It’s simply up to the local school boards to make that decision,” McNally said.
State Sen. Richard Briggs, R-Knox County, opposes the legislation.
“It’s just not right,” Briggs said. “The Tennessee Constitution says all children will be educated in public schools. It doesn’t say if they’re legal, illegal, citizens or non-citizens, they have to be educated.”
