MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho — A horse arena in Mountain Home has shut down all operations until further notice after state officials warned of a potentially dangerous outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1, or EHV-1, linked to major competitive horse events in Texas and Oklahoma.

Idaho State Veterinarian Dr. Scott Leibsle said some Idaho horse owners attended events between Nov. 5 and Nov. 19 where the virus was detected, including the WPRA World Finals in Waco, Texas, and the Barrel Futurities of America World Championships in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

“The ability for the virus to continue to shed and infect other animals continued undetected for a period of time, that’s what made this a bigger problem,” Leibsle said.
