The Union government has told the Rajya Sabha that a mosque located within the operational area of Kolkata airport is preventing the secondary runway from being fully used. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the structure sits in the approach path of the runway, forcing authorities to restrict its use by 88 metres on one side.

Responding to a question from BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, the ministry explained that Kolkata Airport has two parallel runways — the primary runway (19L-01R) and the secondary runway (19R-01L). “The primary runway is designated for regular, day-to-day airport operations," the ministry said. The secondary runway is used only when the main one is unavailable, such as during scheduled maintenance.
