Weeds remain one of the biggest challenges Ohio farmers face each season. With several weed species in the state now resistant to multiple herbicide groups, many growers are looking for ways to diversify their management strategies. Cover crops may be another tool in the toolbox for weed suppression. In a recent episode of Ohio State Extension’s Green Fields Green Dollars, water quality associates Rachel Henry and Amber Emmons, along with Ohio Farm Business Analysis program manager Clint Schroeder, talked through the role cover crops can play in a modern weed-control program.

“If you have no kind of weed control, whether it’s cover crops, herbicides, or anything else, in soybeans specifically, you could always end up with up to an 80% loss of yield,” Emmons said.
