Along with everything else in our lives, our garden plants, whether annuals, perennials, vegetables or natives, keep growing in two ways: not only in our gardens but also in price when we buy them.

One way to keep those prices down is to root cuttings of your favorite plants, thus creating additional plants for free. There are several ways to root the cuttings — in potting soil, in vermiculite, by layering stems, or perhaps easiest of all — in water, as we will discuss below.
