The Trinamool Congress on Thursday suspended Debra MLA Humayun Kabir from the party after his claims of “building a Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad district, India Today reported.

The Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished on December 6, 1992, by Hindu extremists who claimed that an ancient Ram temple stood on the site. Over 31 years later, the Ram temple was inaugurated at the site in a ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier this week, Kabir had stirred a controversy after declaring that a foundation stone for a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid would be laid at Beldanga in Murshidabad on December 6, India Today reported.

Subsequently, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim on Thursday announced the decision to suspend Kabir for his remarks about the Babri Masjid, saying
