Police in Blantyre are holding 21 female students from Michiru View Girls Secondary School for allegedly setting fire to several school buildings.
The incident occurred after the students reportedly protested a revised closing date that was changed from 19 December to 21 December 2025.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Doris Mwitha said the fire destroyed a hostel, the headteacher’s office and school stores.
She added that school books, certificates and other valuable items were also burnt in the blaze.
Mwitha confirmed that investigations are ongoing and the students are expected to face arson-related charges.
She warned that any student found responsible would face the consequences.
The school administration has closed the institution due to the extent of the damage.
