The Trump administration says the current mile-per-gallon standards are out of whack with the law but as for Detroit's automakers getting back the money spent on meeting them, the president says no way.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, President Donald Trump unveiled new proposed mpg standards that are significantly scaled back from those proposed in 2024 by then-President Joe Biden , with he and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy arguing Biden's rules violated the 50-year-old law that calls for the standards by considering the impact of electric vehicles, or EVs, in hitting them.
