Stargazers will get a feast for the eyes this evening as a spectacular supermoon lights up the sky.

Dubbed the Cold Moon, it will be the third and final supermoon of 2025 – so it’s certainly not to be missed.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the moon is “in perigee”, meaning it is “at its closest point to Earth in its orbit”, according to BBC Weather.

The distance between the moon and Earth typically varies. Royal Museums Greenwich explained this is “because the Earth is not right at the centre of the Moon’s orbit and the Moon’s orbit is not a circle (it’s an ellipse)”.

With tonight’s moon being especially close to our planet, it makes the full moon appear larger, brighter and more visually stunning than usual.
