India continues to bolster its nuclear capabilities amid rivalry with neighbors China and Pakistan, as it is expected to soon place the third nuclear-armed submarine into service.

Why It Matters

India is estimated to possess about 180 warheads in its nuclear arsenal , while China and Pakistan have 600 and 170, respectively. New Delhi fought a conventional war with Islamabad in May and has an unresolved, "complicated" border dispute with Beijing.
