MULLINS, S.C. — A South Carolina police officer is facing charges after disposing of a department-owned phone for cash.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said 24-year-old Chrisgen Shemar Gause was a Class 1-certified police officer for the Mullins Police Department on May 23, when he allegedly sold an Apple iPhone by placing it in an ecoATM kiosk for $140.
SLED said the phone belonged to the Mullins Police Department and was purchased with public funds. As a result, Gause was charged with embezzlement of under $10,000 in public funds after a magistrate judge found probable cause to issue a warrant on Nov. 5. Gause was served on Dec. 2 and booked into the Marion County Detention Center.
The South Carolina Attorney General's Office is prosecuting the case.
