NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin at Delhi’s Palam airport on Thursday evening, marking the start of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. Modi greeted Putin with a hug and a rare personal reception, underscoring the significance of the long-standing relationship between the two nations. Traditional dancers performed as the leaders shared a car ride, reminiscent of their previous meeting in Tianjin three months ago.

In a post on X, Modi expressed his delight, stating, "Delighted to welcome my friend, President Putin, to India. Looking forward to our interactions later this evening and tomorrow. India-Russia friendship is a time-tested one that has greatly benefitted our people."

The discussions during this summit are expected to focus on defence cooperation, trade, and economic ties. On Friday, Putin will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat. The leaders will then engage in formal talks at Hyderabad House over a working lunch.

Ahead of Putin's arrival, defence ministers from both countries held talks regarding India's plans to acquire additional S-400 missile systems and explore further military hardware, including the Su-57 fighter jet. Agreements on logistics support and the movement of Indian workers to Russia are also anticipated.

Trade and energy discussions will be crucial, especially as India aims to manage a significant trade deficit with Russia, which stands at USD 65 billion in imports compared to USD 5 billion in exports. Moscow has offered additional discounts on oil, and cooperation in fertilisers and a proposed free-trade pact with the Eurasian Economic Union will be discussed.

Putin is also expected to update Modi on the latest developments regarding the Ukraine conflict, with India reiterating its stance that dialogue is essential for resolution. After the summit, Putin will launch the India channel of Russia’s state broadcaster and attend a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu before departing Delhi around 9 pm on Friday.

This visit highlights the enduring partnership between India and Russia, which has remained strong through various global challenges, including Cold War dynamics and current geopolitical tensions. As Modi and Putin meet, the world watches closely for the outcomes of their discussions.
