The Hockey News' list of top 100 Detroit Red Wings is similar to The Detroit News' list of the top 100 players in franchise history , published last month during the team's Centennial Celebration at MotorCity Casino.

Except for one early notable difference.

The Hockey News, the top-selling hockey publication for more than 75 years in North America, picked Swede Nicklas Lidstrom as the second-best Red Wing behind the legendary Gordie Howe.

The News selected longtime captain and current GM Steve Yzerman No. 2, Lidstrom No. 3.

"When I think of Nick Lidstrom, I think of a top-two defenseman of all-time," said Ryan Kennedy, editor-in-chief of The Hockey News, which released its top 100 Red Wings this week.
