CHICAGO (WLS) -- The elevated CTA station at State and Lake streets downtown Chicago will shut down on Jan. 5, the Chicago Department of Transportation said Thursday.

There's already been a lot of work being done on State and Lake right outside the ABC7 Chicago studios.

That's in preparation for the demolition and reconstruction of the 120-year-old station.

The CTA says the new station won't open for three years, sometime in 2029.

It will feature wider platforms, new elevators for full accessibility, a striking glass canopy and improved lighting and visibility.

State and Lake is the fifth highest ridership station in the system, and located at one of the busiest transfer points in the Loop.
