Four GTA residents have had traffic convictions overturned after Ontario’s top court found that Mississauga city staff altered a batch of red light tickets without authorization and failed to notify them, preventing them — and possibly dozens of other unknowing drivers — from fighting the infractions.

The decision to alter the tickets was made after municipal officials realized each infraction bore incorrect location codes, indicating they had been issued to drivers in London, not Mississauga.

Staff failed to notify the drivers, however, “depriving (the drivers) of the ability to exercise their (legal) options,” Justice M.C.T Lai wrote in her September ruling.
