Sports groups in Calgary are celebrating a major infusion to the city’s 2026 capital budget that will allocate nearly $100 million toward local recreation facilities.

The almost nine-figure funding injection is the result of a pair of amendments from Ward 5 Coun. Raj Dhaliwal, both of which were supported unanimously Tuesday. The budget as a whole, which includes $3.8 billion in capital expenditures, was approved Wednesday.

Dhaliwal’s first amendment was to allocate $65 million from the community investment reserve to fund the first two phases of the Northeast Athletic Complex, a future multisport recreation facility in Saddle Ridge.
