ShakeAlert sent a false alarm Thursday morning warning of a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Carson City, Nev., that was never detected by USGS.

The alert reached phones across the Bay Area, Sacramento and eastern California via Wireless Emergency Alerts and the MyShake app just after 8 a.m.

The system has previously misfired: In 2021, it overestimated a Lake Tahoe quake’s magnitude; a 2023 test alert was sent at the wrong time.
