DES MOINES, Iowa ( KUOO ) - A Spirit Lake man was among four Iowans presented with the Governor’s Lifesaving Awards during a ceremony at the statehouse in Des Moines.
According to KUOO Radio, Kyle Peterson was given the Lifesaving with Valor Award for his actions on January 5, 2025, when he rescued a couple after the UTV they had been riding on East Lake Okoboji went through the ice.

Peterson was having dinner at the Waterfront at the time when he saw the incident take place. He ran a half mile across the lake and took off his jacket, throwing it to the woman and using it as a rope to pull the woman to safety.
