The Federal Communications Commission said this week that it was cracking down on a company that has transmitted an estimated 8 million scam robocalls this year from the AI-generated voices of “Emma”, Carl” or other fictitious people who falsely claim to be employees of Walmart.
In pre-recorded messages, Emma, Carl or other robocallers notify call recipients that $919.45 has been charged to their Walmart accounts for a “pre-authorized purchase” of a PlayStation 5. If the call recipients want to cancel the orders or have questions, they’re told to “press 1,” the FCC said . They’re then connected to a live person who tries to extract personal information, such as a Social Security number, from the call recipient, the FCC said.
