PORTLAND, Maine — When Chelsea Canedy was six or seven years old, she filled out a workbook posing several questions, one of which was: What do you want to be when you grow up?

In a childish scrawl, she wrote a “horse rider and an artist.”

It was a peculiar answer for a kid who had seen a horse in real life on no more than one or two occasions. Yet that reply turned out to be eerily prophetic. With dogged pursuit, she made her dreams come true.

Canedy now lives in the central Maine town of Wales, where she rides horses on her property called Unexpected Farm. In the winter, she heads to Ocala, Florida, a community known as “the Horse Capital of the World.”
