Employees at four Starbucks locations in New Jersey are joining a nationwide strike.
Baristas at Starbucks in Parsippany, Ledgewood, Pennington and Rockaway are joining the Red Cup Rebellion, a strike organized by Starbucks Workers United.
The organization says baristas are on strike to protest unresolved unfair labor practices Starbucks has committed while the coffee chain continues to stonewall negotiating a fair labor contract.
Baristas are demanding higher pay and better hours. The strike, which began last month, has grown to 3,000 baristas from 145+ stores across 105+ cities, Starbucks Workers United said, while 200,000 people have signed a pledge vowing not to buy Starbucks while the strike is ongoing.
A spokesperson for Starbucks told USA Today that 99% of the companies stores remain open for business.
"99% of our 17,000 U.S. locations remain open and welcoming customers – including many the union publicly stated would strike but never closed or have since reopened," Jaci Anderson told said. "Regardless of the union’s plans, we do not anticipate any meaningful disruption. When the union is ready to return to the bargaining table, we’re ready to talk."
Starbucks Workers Union has said going back to the bargaining table is pointless unless Starbucks s committed to addressing the union's proposals.
