House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing mounting pressure from House Republican women — all staunch loyalists of President Donald Trump — who have publicly defied his leadership during this week alone.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the chair of House Republican Leadership, became the latest to offer her sharpest criticism yet of the GOP leader on Wednesday, describing Johnson as an ineffective leader who is losing control of his conference in an interview released by The Wall Street Journal.
“He certainly wouldn’t have the votes to be speaker if there was a roll-call vote tomorrow,” Stefanik, who is running for governor of New York, told the outlet. “I believe that the majority of Republicans would vote for new leadership. It’s that widespread.”
