A Department of Justice spokesperson told Newsweek , in part, that the agency is “laser focused on rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse” after a Minnesota federal prosecutor said fraud cases in the state are “resource-intensive,” and not everyone can be charged.
At a press conference in September announcing charges against eight defendants in a housing stabilization fraud scheme, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Joseph H. Thompson said, “We’re just working extra hard. No, I mean, we don’t have enough to charge everyone. We can’t prosecute our way out of this problem. These cases are resource-intensive. Obviously, we have a small team. It’s a dedicated team.”
