The city of Tempe is looking to pass the first ordinance of its kind in the state that would seek to stop drink spiking in local bars.
The effort, led by Councilmember Randy Keating and a city committee tasked with finding solutions, would require bars to provide drink covers and test kits to patrons in exchange for a rebate on their liquor license.
“It’s a problem that I felt that we could address with a few commonsense approaches,” said Keating.
In 2024, the city of Tempe had 23 reported incidents of drink spiking; however, an estimated 90% go unreported. The new ordinance could change that.
The city hosted a public event presenting Knope and Nightcap, two products that can help detect if a drink has been spiked and that can be requested at local bars.
