The explosion that destroyed a couple’s Dacono mobile home on Tuesday was caused when a contractor hit a gas line while boring for fiber optic lines, causing a leak.

Officials think the gas leak spread up through the gravel surrounding nearby water lines, before the gas pooled below the Glen Heather Court mobile home. The gas then ignited on an unconfirmed source, according to a Mountain View Fire Rescue social media post. Officials think the gas may have ignited on a water heater or furnace pilot light, the post states.

When checking on the leak, Black Hills Energy found only a light gas odor and didn’t get any gas readings on its air monitor, the post states. Black Hills told Mountain View they could leave the scene after that initial check, according to Mountain View.
