MONTVALE, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are warning residents to be on high alert after a woman was bitten by a fox on Tuesday.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Bryan Drive, just off Main Street.
Officials say the animal bit the 61-year-old victim's leg before running behind her home.
She was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Animal Control responded and canvassed the surrounding area with dogs but were unable to locate the fox.
The neighborhood borders wooded areas where wildlife thrives, so seeing a fox is not unusual, but one that would attack a human is a cause for great concern.
Officials are urging residents in the affected area to avoid contact with stray or wild animals and to remain vigilant for unusual behavior.
