BOSTON —
Soon, the iconic CITGO sign, standing seven stories above Beacon Street, will be moved from its original location to a new one just 40 yards away.
The 60-by-60 Boston staple, built in the 1940s and originally called Cities Service, has been a beloved landmark for generations.
As part of an effort to restore the sign and its sightline, it'll be moved about 30 feet higher and 120 feet behind the existing location.
“The sign will be taken down. The panels will be evaluated and looked to see if they're in good shape, need any refurbishment, before we put those back up, we won't move the entire thing; it's going to be rebuilt as pieces,” said Karl Schmidt of CITGO Petroleum.
