An 8-year-old horse that bolted from its owner after being startled on a trail later died from its injuries, leaving its rider severely hurt and calling for increased trail safety.
Rosie Kennedy told CBS News Boston she was riding her horse, Pops, in Ipswich on Nov. 21 when a man on a mountain bike veered off nearby railroad tracks and onto the path, spooking the animal.
Kennedy was thrown from the horse, which then ran ahead without a rider.
“Pops just lost his mind,” Kennedy told CBS News Boston. “He was just terrified. He reared and he spun, and he started to gallop.”
Kennedy suffered a broken ankle and damage to her knee. She crawled 30 minutes back to a barn, where an ambulance took her to the hospital.
Pops was later found at a nearby farm with life-threatening injuries. A vet
