This summer, I reported for jury duty in Springfield. I anticipated a long morning — maybe delays or confusion. What I didn’t expect was the overwhelming sense of disquiet that washed over me as I approached the State Street courthouse.
The building looked worn out, neglected and visibly deteriorated. Inside, it was no better. Closed sections, water damage and signs of long-term decay were everywhere. It was disheartening to see a place meant to symbolize justice in such abandonment.
Standing there, I realized something people in Western Massachusetts often express but rarely receive adequate attention
