GREENSBORO, N.C. — Crews in Greensboro and Winston-Salem spent Thursday preparing for winter weather expected to move into the Triad overnight, urging residents to use caution on the roads Friday morning.

City leaders in Greensboro said pre-treatment began at 4 a.m. and continued through the afternoon as crews sprayed salt brine across bridges, overpasses and more than 550 miles of shaded roadways that typically freeze first. The city maintains two salt barns, including a 3,000-ton pile at its main operations yard.

Greensboro activated its emergency snow operation on Thursday. As part of that plan, the city will move into 24-hour coverage at midnight, using two 12-hour shifts to keep workers on the roads around the clock.
