There are few limitations on abortion in Michigan since it was enshrined in the state constitution, which has resulted in almost all regulations around the procedure being struck down or suspended.
Democratic lawmakers, who repealed reporting requirements in 2023, now insist on continuing to keep the state in the dark about the abortions that do take place here.
There is little chance the Democratic-led Senate will take up bills pending before the Republican-led House that would reinstate laws requiring abortion providers to report various personal — but non-identifying — data on terminated pregnancies to the state.
That could include age ranges of patients, gestational weeks of fetuses, complications with the procedure, county of residence or other information.
