US President Donald Trump framed himself as a peacemaker on Thursday, hailing Congo and Rwanda’s leaders for their courage as they signed a US-brokered pact aimed at easing one of Africa’s most volatile conflicts — and opening the region’s coveted mineral reserves to American companies, according to the Associated Press.
“It’s a great day for Africa, a great day for the world,” Trump said, savouring the moment as another global deal he believes only he could deliver.
The agreement, signed in Washington and first reported by the Associated Press, is meant to halt the fighting in eastern Congo, one of the world’s longest-running and bloodiest conflicts, while also deepening US access to rare earth minerals vital for defence and high-tech manufacturing, the Associated Press reported.
