Nandamuri Balakrishna's highly anticipated film Akhanda 2 has been postponed indefinitely, just hours before its scheduled release on December 5. The production company, 14 Reels Plus, announced the delay due to ongoing legal disputes, leaving fans disappointed and confused.
The postponement was confirmed on December 4 through a statement on X, where the makers expressed their regret, stating, "With a heavy heart, we regret to inform you that #Akhanda2 will not be releasing as scheduled due to unavoidable circumstances. This is a painful moment for us, and we truly understand the disappointment it brings to every fan and movie lover awaiting the film. We are working tirelessly to resolve the matter at the earliest. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Your support means the world to us. We promise to share a positive update very soon."
The film's release was halted following a court order from the Madras High Court, which issued an injunction against its screening. This legal action stemmed from a long-standing dispute between Eros International Media Limited and 14 Reels Entertainment, involving a financial claim of approximately ₹28 crore. Eros argued that the release of Akhanda 2 was an attempt by 14 Reels to evade compliance with the arbitral award.
The court's decision, made by a Division Bench comprising Justice SM Subramaniam and Justice C. Kumarappan, prevents any release, distribution, or commercial exploitation of the film until further notice. This ruling has created uncertainty not only for the film's release but also for ticket buyers, as tickets were still available on booking platforms, leading to confusion about refunds.
In addition to the legal issues, technical problems also contributed to the cancellation of paid premieres scheduled for December 4. The production team faced challenges with overseas key delivery messages required for digital screenings, further complicating the situation.
Akhanda 2 is the sequel to the 2021 hit Akhanda and features a cast that includes Samyuktha and Harshaali Malhotra. The film's soundtrack, composed by Thaman S, had already garnered positive feedback from fans. As of now, the makers have not announced a new release date, leaving fans eagerly awaiting updates on the film's future.
